Canopy Walkway
The Kakum National Park Canopy Walkway is one of Ghana’s most famous tourist attractions and a remarkable eco-tourism destination in West Africa. Located within the tropical rainforest of Kakum National Park in the Central Region of Ghana, the canopy walkway offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience the beauty of the forest from above.
The walkway consists of a series of suspended bridges stretching approximately 330 to 350 metres in length and connecting seven tree platforms high above the forest floor. Some sections rise between 27 and 40 metres above the ground, providing breathtaking panoramic views of the rainforest canopy.
Constructed in 1995 through a collaborative effort involving conservation organizations, international engineers, and skilled Ghanaian artisans, the canopy walkway was designed to promote eco-tourism while preserving the forest ecosystem. The structure is made of strong wire ropes, wooden planks, aluminium ladders, and safety netting to ensure visitors’ safety.
Walking across the canopy bridges is both thrilling and educational. Visitors can enjoy spectacular views of towering trees, birds, butterflies, and other wildlife that are rarely seen from the forest floor. The experience also allows tourists to appreciate the rich biodiversity of the Upper Guinean rainforest, one of the world’s important tropical forest ecosystems.
The canopy walkway has become a major symbol of tourism and conservation in Ghana, attracting thousands of local and international visitors every year. Guided tours are usually organized to ensure safety and to educate visitors about the history, plants, and wildlife of the forest. Many visitors describe the walk as adventurous, exciting, and unforgettable, especially for those overcoming a fear of heights.
Today, the Kakum Canopy Walkway remains one of Africa’s best-known rainforest canopy experiences and continues to promote environmental conservation, education, and sustainable tourism in Ghana.
